This Kluster Founder is an Inner-West resider from the days when weekly rental amounts sat comfortably in the double digits. From when Sydney shunned the prevalent shoelessness of the area’s residents and the facades of the 20th century, two-story buildings that lined King Street and Enmore Road, presented as if they had not be graced with a lick of paint since their erection, all those years ago. Like many others, I have watched the area morph and transition into something of a Sydney destination. Some aspects of which I despise, many others I embrace.
One new addition that falls into the latter (love) category is The Green Room Lounge on Enmore Road. The newest bar on Enmore Road - and first decent small drinking hole, we might add – was opened by textile designer, Tandarra Rothman, and director at Adam Spencer Enterprise, Melanie Spencer, with a celebrity-filled bang in late August. Since the doors were first flung wide the guest tone has lowered a little to include the likes of many mere non-celebrity mortals but the service standards and atmosphere have remained high.
On any given night guest can wander off the street into the 1950s inspired, art-deco drinking den. The currently short-but-sweet wine list comprises of predominantly Australian and New Zealand drops - Tandarra and Melinda are actively keeping it local - and can accommodate most tastes and wallet sizes. We have it on good authority that the list will be lengthened in the near future to reflect the selection habits of guests thus far. Bottled beer and cider are also available, as is a tasting menu - with the cheese boards being the stand out item.
Drinks of choice can be enjoyed whilst reclining on one of the many decade-suited couches, under the watchful gaze of Audrey Hepburn or, say, Cary Grant. Silver screen voyeurs are determined by staff selection and come in the form of mid-century Hollywood films projected on the room’s southern wall. The Lounge is pleasantly busy most nights of the week. As with most things Enmore Road, still manages to remain a rather well kept secret (the locals are a possessive lot) so finding a seat midweek is, thankfully, not an onerous task.
