review: jonathan boulet by danni le toullec

The newest kid on the Modular block, Jonathan Boulet, already has quite a following. The launch for his self-titled album at the Civic Hotel on Thursday night was packed to the walls with swaying bodies, tapping feet and bopping heads.

Boulet isn’t reinventing the wheel on this one; it is acoustic, laid-back tunes at their best. The album balances catchy tunes such like ‘Ones Who Fly Twos Who Die’ and ‘Community Service Announcement’ with raw, pared down tracks such as ‘Latch Key Kids Unite’ and ‘North to South East to You’.

Joining Ladyhawke, Muscles, The Presets, Chromeo, Tame Impala and Wolfmother on the Modular label, Boulet couldn’t be in a better position to crack the international music scene. For the time being, he is doing what no one thought possible: putting Castle Hill on the map as Sydney's newest underground music hub.

Across 11 tracks, the album proves itself as a solid debut for the 21-year-old Australian. Not only does he play the guitar, keys and drums, he wrote all of the songs on the album and recorded it himself in the garage. He's currently on high rotation at FBi Radio and Triple J. Everyone say hello to Jonathan Boulet, Sydney’s Summer sweetheart.
