I must confess: It’s been a (long) while since I’ve been to church. With all my opinions on the absurdities of organised religion aside, I can’t deny the inherent tranquillity of a house of worship - the inherent stillness, the automatic reverence, a place for sacred ceremonies and MySpace Secret Shows.
Florence was missing most of her Machine tonight, on this her first EVER Australian performance. Flanked by a harp and an acoustic guitarist, multi-coloured light glowing from the surrounding stain glass windows, self-confessed eccentric Ms Welch proved her lungs alone were enough to breathe 'Cosmic Love' and a heavenly new life into a rundown and mostly ignored church on Oxford St.
Trademark red locks ablaze with backlighting, her soulful aching bellow stretched, swirled and soared to hymnal heights in the hour length show, signed off with crowd pleaser 'You’ve Got The Love'. Well, we sure hope she felt it too.
