The winner of this year’s Australian/Vogel Literary Award was announced last night, during a mid-eve celebration held on the terrace atop the Allen & Unwin building in Sydney. A balmy rooftop terrace event with bookish types; what more could one ask for?
This year the race was so tight that, after much deliberation, the judges decided to award two burgeoning authors the illustrious title – not to mention the $20k that comes with said title. Lisa Lang’s Utopian Man and Kristel Thornell’s Night Street took top honours.
The writers will share in the cash. Both manuscripts will be published by Allen & Unwin. The previously unpublished novels were selected from a pool of over 200 entries. Past winners include Tim Winton, Kate Grenville and Brian Castro.
