review: yacht, oxford arts factory, sydney, by danni le toullec

The eccentric duo, Yacht took over Sydney’s Oxford Arts Factory with their infectious energy and offbeat choreography. The pair's visual duality was echoed in the set, which consisted of segments of vigorous geek-chic dance moves intersected by frequent chats with the crowd.

Decked out in a white suit complete with suspenders and a black dress with futuristic shoulder pads respectively, Jona and Claire succeeded in keeping the audience on their toes. Partly a comedic performance; these two know how to push the boundaries of their musical genre whilst having a laugh. They pulled up Google maps in their power point at the start of the show and proceeded to show us where they lived in Oregon using a red laser pointer.

The bubbly electro beats provided a perfect backdrop to the mantra-like lyrics. Yacht encourages group consciousness; they led a guided meditation and broke through the audience/performer barrier by launching their bodies into the crowd and serenading some happy fans.

Bouncing between spiritual references, chants and ancient triangular symbolism, Yacht will keep you guessing. Whether it is a slightly strange fan asking what underwear they wore in the Q&A section or Jona’s Revenge of the Nerds-esque dancing. This is a live act not to be missed.
