Last time Perth’s Kill Devil Hills played Sydney the city glowed through western red dust, this time a summer thunderstorm turned the night steamy and sub tropical and provided a perfect atmosphere from the swampy blues sounds of their new album Man, You Should Explode.
Sydney locals Wifey opened the evening with a charming and relaxed set from their debut EP Salt, Sugar, Fat. Rock pop tunes, with an strong dash of country, gently but surely warmed the crowd up. Andy Calvert’s vocals were full of lovely emotion and Kirsten Morley looked enchanting playing the melodica.
Tucker B’s were up next and kicked of with the spooky 'First Born Son' which made excellent use of some torch-under-chin/camp fire lighting. Screaming vocals and ferocious guitar abuse resulted in a big fat rollicking set. Spod’s Brent Griffin helped out on keys and clearly shares the band juvenile but endearing sense of humour.
Their unique sense of variety and up-yours attitude provided few dull moments.More...

It was left to I Heart Hiroshima to warm the crowd immediately before the band of the rising sun. The bounding Brisbane trio, showcasing songs from their new album The Rip, were an exceptionally endearing entre, with their banter and songs splendidly chipper. This atypical bass-less three piece craft such great buzzing blasts of songs, and with the variety provided by the twin boy-girl vocal fronts are engaging to the end and even urged the crowd to push forward and fill every last space for Shonen Knife.
The Osaka-hailing trio took to the stage proudly displaying their own banners, before taking their positions and launching into a song / welcome mostly comprising “Konnichiwa, we like to rock”. It was probably one of their more complex lyrics. Shonen Knife are more about the infectiously frothy, purely effusive blasts of music – that borrows equally from The Ramones and The Ronnettes - than any great insightful verse.

It's still a few weeks away, but we're overly excited (can you tell?) about our good friends Children Collide coming to Sydney to play a show on Friday, 17th April. It's great news because we always love to watch Johnny crooning into his guitar (yes, into). If Kurt was still around, he’d be proud as punch.
The even-better news is that they are also touring around the nation, so we can all share in the fun. It's very anti un-Australian of them. The best news is that if all you Sydneysiders get there early enough to see the support you'll get to check out Boarder Thieves. Trust us, you'll be glad you were punctual. Enough said.
